Councillor Sam Murray's success for wheelchair-friendly swing in Castle Hill Park

Cllr Sam Murray, councillor for Castle Hill,  has been campaigning for increased accessibility for disabled children in the town's play areas for a year.

Sam, a part time wheelchair user herself, was in shock by the news from Ipswich Borough Council that the the first would be installed in her ward.

She said: "I can't believe it, I never thought it would happen. I'm so happy. Play areas were going to be upgraded, and we learned that councils in Scotland have installed wheelchair swings and I decided to campaign for it."

Ability swings allow wheelchair users to swing alongside a flat-seated swing, enabling them to enjoy parks alongside other children.

Since Sam started campaigning, other councils in England have started making plans to install wheelchair-accessible swings.

Sam added "Every step of the way, whatever they've come back with, I've had an answer for - it's too expensive, it's not really done, we can't get a supplier. Every step of the way I've been on it and I'm so happy it's finally being done, and in a park in my area."

The park is near Thomas Wolsey school, a special needs school on Defoe Road.

She thinks this is a 'game-changer', and the children in the school will be able to enjoy the play area.

She concluded: "I have friends who have children who are wheelchair users and I understand how hard it is to ensure everyone is included."
