With strong financial and fiscal management of the national and Suffolk economy by the Conservatives, in Ipswich unemployment has reduced again  - a month on month reduction of 1.5%. It has fallen from a peak of 4,545 now down to 1,305.

Figures show that unemployment is down by more than 900,000 nationally since 2010 – and at the lowest rate for more than a decade. There are 294,000 extra people working in the last year alone.

These figures show that the employment rate for women is now at a record high, wages are rising and unemployment remains at an 11-year low - highlighting the strength and resilience of our economy.

Youth unemployment is also down again - now 88.6% reduced since its peak. We will help the remaining 115 young people to get into job or training, such as through our My Go Centre (picture shown from March 2015).

Ben Gummer MP said “We are making such good progress on ridding our town of the scourge of joblessness but now is the time to double down and try harder still.”

Labour always try and tell people that all these jobs are part-time, insecure and poorly paid – in fact:

  •          Since 2010, over 70 per cent of the rise in employment has been from full time work.
  •          Since 2010, 95 per cent of the growth in employment has come from permanent employees or people working for themselves.
  •          Real wages are continuing to rise strongly.

Under Labour youth unemployment rose by 44 per cent– meaning young people were not getting the skills they need to get on in life, and the number of households where no member had ever worked nearly doubled.

We know that there is much more to do. Ipswich and Suffolk Conservatives are working together with our local MPs to ensure that we continue to build a strong economy for this area and give everyone better opportunities in developing skills and creating new jobs. Only the Conservatives can be trusted to continue to enable this.
