The Labour Government had chosen Suffolk to proceed with 3 new unitary councils' elections in 2027, with an authority covering Ipswich and southern Suffolk taking over the responsbilities of Suffolk County Coucil, Ipswich Borough Councils and the District Councils.
However today (7 September), the government in its latest shambolic u-turn, has pulled the plug on this local government reorganisation, and the status quo of current councils will continue including Ipswich Borough Council elections next May.
The rushed council reorganisation process that the Labour government has pursued has been chaotic from start to finish. They seem incapable of following advice or making proper decisions. The only thing we can be sure of is that this latest u-turn means vast sums of council tax payers' money has been wasted along with more chaos, delay and uncertainty for all of us who live, work in and run businesses in Ipswich and across Suffolk, including local councils and their staff - on whom this is taking a huge toll.
