Work has now begun on the Stoke Quay Site that will see nearly 400 new homes built, including affordable accommodation for people needing extra care.

The major scheme is being developed by Genesis Housing Association, with £7.5 million of funding from the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). It is a project that the Conservative-led administration had been negotiating since 2007.

The scheme will comprise:

·        45 flats with extra care for older people

·        14 wheelchair standard flats

·        43 shared ownership flats

·        23 houses for rent

·        Flats for rent

·        2 shared ownership houses

“It’s wonderful to see the regeneration that is occurring all around the waterfront. Although the Conservative-led administration lost power last May, this is one of many achievements to be looked back at with pride”, said Shadow Planning and Economic Development spokesman Cllr Kym Stroet.

Ipswich MP, Ben Gummer, is excited about the scheme and feels that it is a sign that the economy is beginning to turn around.

“This is one of a number of excellent projects that indicate real growth in the heart of the town.”

The homes are due for completion in 2013.
